Periodontal Treatments (Deep Cleaning)
Periodontics is a dental specialty focused on the supporting structures of the teeth, namely (but not limited to) the gums. Periodontal disease, an advanced stage of gingivitis, is an infection of the gums caused by the buildup of plaque and bacteria on the teeth.
Periodontal treatment involves containing the infection through deep cleaning. This involves performing scaling and planing on the root of the tooth below the gum line. Specific toothpastes, mouth rinses and antibiotics may also be prescribed to fight infections. Surgery is required for the most severe cases.
